About Squirrels

When Is Squirrel Baby Season in Kentucky & Indiana?

Squirrels in the Louisville area typically have two litters per year. The first is in late winter/early spring (February–April) and the second is in late summer (August–September). Understanding these seasons is critical for safe, effective removal.

Why Baby Season Matters for Removal

Baby season is why you should never just block a hole yourself. Here's what happens if you do:

  • Mother locked out, babies trapped inside: Babies can't survive without their mother. They'll die inside your walls or attic, creating an unbearable smell and costly removal.
  • Desperate mother causes more damage: A mother separated from her babies will chew through wood, siding, and even roofing to get back to them.
  • Legal issues: Causing the death of wildlife through negligence can have legal consequences in Kentucky.

How We Handle Baby Season Removals

Our humane exclusion process is designed to protect baby squirrels:

  1. We inspect the attic to determine if babies are present
  2. If babies are found, we wait until they're mobile enough to leave with their mother (typically 8–10 weeks old)
  3. We install one-way doors so the entire family can exit naturally
  4. Only after confirming the attic is vacant do we complete final exclusion

This approach takes slightly longer but ensures no animals are harmed and provides a permanent solution.

Signs of Baby Squirrels in Your Attic

  • High-pitched squeaking or chirping sounds (different from adult scratching sounds)
  • Increased activity from the mother squirrel, especially during morning hours
  • Sounds coming from one specific area (the nest location)
  • Timing: February–April or August–September
