Why Are Squirrels Always on My Roof?

Squirrels are on your roof for two main reasons: access and opportunity. Overhanging tree branches act as a natural highway to your roof. Once there, they explore and can easily find or create entry points through gaps in the soffit, vents, or along the roofline.

Why Louisville Roofs Are Especially Vulnerable

Louisville has one of the largest urban tree canopies in the United States. This means virtually every home has mature trees within jumping distance of the roof. Combined with the Olmsted Parks system creating green corridors through the city, squirrel populations here are exceptionally high.

The Squirrel-to-Attic Pipeline

Here's what typically happens when squirrels discover your roof:

  1. Trees provide access — Squirrels leap from overhanging branches (they can jump 8–10 feet horizontally)
  2. They explore the roofline — Looking for gaps, cracks, or weak spots
  3. They find or create an entry — A hole the size of a quarter is all they need
  4. They move in — Your warm attic becomes their new home
  5. Damage beginsChewing wires, destroying insulation, and building nests

How to Stop Squirrels on Your Roof

  • Trim trees: Keep branches 6–8 feet from your roofline — the single most effective step
  • Install guards: Metal tree trunk guards can prevent squirrels from climbing certain trees
  • Seal entry points: Our exclusion service seals all vulnerable spots with chew-proof materials
  • Cap your chimney: A stainless steel chimney cap prevents chimney entry
  • Proactive inspection: Our prevention service identifies and fixes vulnerabilities before squirrels find them
